FAQ

  • Are procedures performed on the first visit?

All patients undergo a thorough consultation on the first visit, which involves history and physical examination. Almost every patient will require a formal ultrasound of their veins to be ordered by Dr. Yacob. This ultrasound is performed at Kingston General Hospital, at the new state-of-the-art vascular laboratory on Kidd 7. Only after the ultrasound results, can intervention plans be offered. Procedures are not performed on initial consultation.

  • Are procedures covered under OHIP or private insurance?

Unfortunately, OHIP does not cover advanced sclerotherapy or Venaseal ablation. Extended health care plans often do not cover these procedures, despite our efforts to advocate for you.

  • Do I have travel restrictions after any procedure?

Yes, there are safety recommendations surrounding long travel immediately after vein procedures.

For 2 weeks, we recommend against air-travel or long road trips. After this timeframe, we recommend wearing compression therapy during long travel for up to 3 months from the procedure date.

  • What timeline can I expect?

-For the initial consultation, Dr. Yacob is able to see most patient within 6-12 months.

-The ultrasound lab at KGH can accommodate most patients within 4 weeks, and follow up with Dr. Yacob is usually shortly thereafter.

-If you decide to proceed with an intervention, the procedure waitlist is about 4 months.

  • Who performs the procedure?

Dr. Yacob performs all the procedures himself. There are no nurse-injectors, residents, or trainees in the room or involved with your care.

  • Will my veins come back after treatment?

Varicose veins are a lifelong problem, and recurrence is very common, regardless of what treatment you choose or who performs it. Some people have recurrence after a few months, and some people have recurrence after many years. Many of Dr. Yacob’s patients have already had treatment from other specialists in the past, and his treatment options are individually catered to every patient’s unique veins.

  • What areas can be treated?

Dr. Yacob is specialized in treating varicose veins of the legs, exclusively. Treatments for other areas of the body will not be offered. For example face, arms, hands, and chest.
